ABB signs agreement with Savannah as plans progress for zero emission lithium project in Europe

LONDON, UK: Savannah Resources plc, the European lithium development company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global technology chief ABB in reference to the beforehand introduced Decarbonisation Study for the development and operation of Savannah’s Barroso Lithium Project in northern Portugal.

Savannah is undertaking a Definitive Feasibility Study (“DFS”) for the development of a lithium focus manufacturing facility in northern Portugal. The decarbonisation strategy, which was formally introduced on three March 2022 is a half of Savannah’s dedication to maneuver towards net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions for the Project by maximizing the use of renewable electrical energy to energy mineral manufacturing and processing operations. Savannah’s strategic imaginative and prescient is to construct a state-of-the-art mineral manufacturing operation for a premium, ultra-low carbon spodumene focus as a strategic uncooked supplies in Europe’s battery provide chain.

Under the early-stage agreement, ABB will apply its technical experience to stipulate manufacturing management and course of options for lithium focus manufacturing and built-in spodumene mining operations in line with Savannah’s goal of zero emission operations by 2030.

Savannah will additionally work towards binding agreements with ABB in relation to electrification, automation and digital options within the future.

Commenting on the ABB MoU, Savannah CEO David Archer said: “ABB is on the forefront of the automation and electrification we require for our decarbonisation journey as we progress the event of the Barroso Lithium Project. We are happy to have their experience as we proceed to execute on our decarbonisation technique to construct Europe’s first spodumene manufacturing facility, as a critical provider of low carbon uncooked supplies for lithium-ion batteries. I look ahead to offering our shareholders with additional updates as we transfer towards binding agreements with ABB.”

Commenting for ABB, Frederik Esterhuizen, HUB Division Manager, Process Industries Central & South Europe said: “The development of Savannah’s Barroso Lithium Project provides us with an additional alternative to showcase ABB’s management in industrial automation and smart electrification in Europe, utilized towards key operations for the rising European battery provide chain. This is one other step as we proceed to allow extra sustainable and fossil fuel free mining operations.”
